Urgent Fundraising – Yeap Yew Joe (Acute Myeloid Leukemia)
Description
"When I was diagnosed with leukemia, I felt overwhelmed with fear and confusion because it all happened so suddenly. During chemotherapy, I faced numerous complications, but despite the pain and hardship, I want to continue my treatment and live. I sincerely hope everyone can help me."
Yeap Yew Joe, a 15-year-old teenager from Jinjang, Kuala Lumpur, experienced swollen and bleeding gums, accompanied by mouth ulcers, in October last year. Initially, a dentist attributed it to inflammation and prescribed antibiotics. However, the symptoms persisted despite medication. After several visits to general clinics without improvement, a second dental consultation led to a recommendation for a blood test. The test results showed abnormal blood indices, and he was referred to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Following chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant became necessary. Both his father and sister underwent matching tests, and his father was a suitable donor and willing to donate. However, the Yeap family is financially constrained and unable to cover the substantial medical expenses, hence the plea for RM140,000 to support the treatment costs.
【The parents are overwhelmed with worry about their child’s illness and are helpless in the face of the enormous medical expenses. They have broken down in tears many times, yet they must also comfort their son and encourage him to actively undergo treatment. The immense pressure is taking a toll on them】
After their son was diagnosed with leukemia and began chemotherapy following a long journey of seeking medical help, the parents have nearly exhausted their savings. The doctors informed them that after completing chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant would be necessary. Following the matching tests, the father was deemed a suitable donor, requiring one final round of chemotherapy before the transplant.
The diagnosis has left the entire family distressed. Yeap Yew Joe’s weight plummeted from 75 kg to 57 kg due to the side effects of chemotherapy. A once avid badminton player and computer enthusiast, he has been forced to stop schooling, which has deeply saddened him. His parents are at a loss and have secretly wept many times out of helplessness.
Mr. Yeap, the father, revealed that their annual insurance coverage limit is RM90,000, but they had to initially pay RM25,000 for the first phase of medical expenses out of pocket before claiming reimbursement. After borrowing and scraping together the funds, the insurance company only approved RM9,000 in claims, leaving the remainder for the family to bear, plunging Mr. Yeap into financial distress.
"The diagnosis itself has been a huge blow to us, and now the medical expenses leave us with no means of reimbursement. We can only appeal to reduce the burden. However, the upcoming final round of chemotherapy, the bone marrow transplant, and the potential side effects remain uncertain."
He confessed that if they had the means, they would shoulder the expenses without tapping into social resources. Unfortunately, they have borrowed and raised funds to their limit and are left with no choice but to seek help from the charity.
Yeap Kam Fu, 47, is a car repairman but can now only work part-time due to a knee injury, earning about RM2,300 monthly. His wife, Lum Pik Wai, 47, is a stationery saleswoman with a monthly income of around RM4,000. They also have a 19-year-old daughter in tertiary education.
After a thorough home visit and evaluation, the foundation has decided to raise the necessary medical funds for the teenager. The parents have entrusted the entire fundraising campaign to One Hope Charity, which will also manage the collection of donations.
