Urgent Fundraising – Shailan A/L Sandrasegaran (Burkitt Lymphoma)

Description
"I’ve always been a health-conscious athlete, careful with my diet and fitness. Being diagnosed with cancer after sudden lumps appeared in my lymph nodes left me confused and overwhelmed. But I still want to pursue my dream of becoming a fitness coach—I just hope I can get the treatment I need."
Shailan A/L Sandrasegaran, a 25-year-old from Simpang Pulai, Perak, first developed a fever in early 2024. Soon after, his neck near the collarbone began to swell rapidly. Within two weeks, the lumps in his lymph nodes had grown to the size of ping-pong balls.
Following medical consultations and several tests, he was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma—a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The diagnosis was shocking and left him feeling helpless. While he has begun treatment, his family has already exhausted their savings. Now, he is seeking RM62,000 to continue the necessary medical care.
【Burkitt Lymphoma is a highly aggressive and fast-growing B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Its symptoms often progress rapidly within days or weeks, causing widespread lymph node swelling throughout the body】
Shailan A/L Sandrasegaran, a 25-year-old from Simpang Pulai, Perak, was a state-level athlete since his school days until the COVID-19 pandemic brought his athletic journey to a halt. After completing his diploma at a technical institute, he continued his studies at the bachelor's level. Early last year, he began experiencing symptoms such as fever and fatigue but dismissed them as results of physical exhaustion from working out.
However, in early February, swelling appeared near his collarbone and underarms, and he found it difficult to raise his arms during workouts. He visited a nearby clinic and was prescribed antibiotics, but his condition did not improve. Blood tests later showed an abnormally high white blood cell count, prompting a referral to the hospital. At the time, doctors suspected tuberculosis, cancer, or a bacterial infection, and a biopsy was scheduled.
As the swelling in his lymph nodes rapidly worsened and he began experiencing breathing difficulties and body-wide inflammation, his liver enzyme levels spiked, leading to an emergency hospital admission. After further testing, he was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma, a rare but aggressive cancer of the lymphatic system.
To avoid Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS), doctors administered a combination of gentler chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After enduring eight months of intensive treatment, his family had depleted all their savings.
Doctors now recommend an autologous stem cell transplant. Before the procedure, Shailan must undergo another round of chemotherapy to eliminate any remaining cancer cells, followed by injections to stimulate red blood cell production in preparation for stem cell collection and transplantation. His weight has plummeted from 95kg to just 65kg.
Shailan shared that although chemotherapy initially reduced the tumors, they later returned even more aggressively. When the tumor under his arm became inflamed, his left arm would be in severe pain and he was unable to lift it. He has since been forced to suspend his studies to focus on treatment.
His 67-year-old father is a retired firefighter, while his 55-year-old mother is a housewife. He has a 30-year-old brother and a 28-year-old sister. The family has already borne heavy medical expenses and, coupled with their daily financial commitments, are now facing serious hardship. Out of options, Shailan turned to One Hope Charity for help.
After evaluation, One Hope Charity has decided to assist in raising the RM62,000 required for his treatment. The family has entrusted One Hope Charity with full responsibility for managing the fundraising campaign and collecting donations on their behalf.
