Urgent Fundraising – Ooi Guat Chon & Choo Ping Chuen (Medical & Living Expenses)
Description
72-year-old Ooi Guat Chon began dialysis treatment in 2023. However, in a devastating turn of events, her 47-year-old son, Choo Ping Chuen, who has been the family’s pillar of support, was diagnosed with kidney failure in June this year and also needs dialysis treatment. This unexpected misfortune has cast a shadow over their lives, leaving both mother and son heartbroken.
Adding to their woes, Choo Ping Chuen’s health condition has left him unable to work, rendering him incapable of affording his mother’s injection costs, let alone his own medical expenses. On top of that, he has two special needs children to care for. The family now appeals for public assistance to ease their overwhelming financial burden.
【Before being diagnosed with kidney failure, Choo Ping Chuen worked as a crane operator at construction sites for nearly 30 years, earning an average monthly income of RM4,000. He had been covering his mother’s injection costs on his own, and the family managed to get by. However, his unexpected illness has plunged the family into financial hardship】
Choo Ping Chuen, a single father from Junjong, Kedah, has battled diabetes for over a decade. In June this year, he suddenly collapsed at work and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Doctors delivered the devastating news that he was in Stage 4 kidney failure, with dangerously high toxin levels in his body. He was advised to begin dialysis immediately, leaving him overwhelmed by the diagnosis. Eventually, he accepted the reality and started treatment as recommended by his doctors.
His 72-year-old mother, Ooi Guat Chon, has lived with hepatitis B and diabetes for over 30 years. Last year, she started dialysis treatment due to kidney failure. She undergoes dialysis three times a week—Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—for four hours per session. While her dialysis costs are sponsored, she still needs to cover injection fees and other medical expenses, adding to the family's financial strain.
Choo Ping Chuen, who has worked as a crane operator for nearly 30 years, used to earn RM4,000 per month. Despite his diabetes, he managed to shoulder his mother’s injection fees and support his family. However, his sudden illness has upended their lives. Choo, now divorced, is the father of two sons aged 16 and 15, both of whom have autism and learning disabilities. Since his diagnosis, his younger sister has stepped in to care for the boys, taking them to special schools and managing their daily needs.
Choo is in the process of applying for dialysis coverage through the Social Security Organization (SOCSO). Following a home visit and needs assessment, One Hope Charity has decided to adopt the family. One Hope Charity will raise funds to cover the mother and son’s medical and living expenses, with the family entrusting the foundation to handle the fundraising efforts.
Additionally, One Hope Charity will allocate RM5,000 from its Emergency Medical Reserve Fund to provide immediate relief.
