Description

“My mother fell and fractured her leg. At home, I also have a sister with an intellectual disability. I need to work to support my sister's expenses, but I can’t also take care of my immobile mother. I’m burning the candle at both ends and desperately seek help from the public so my mother can receive proper care.”

69-year-old Kwan Chow Leong from Bukit Mertajam, Penang, is facing relentless misfortunes that have plunged her family into hardship. She suffered a fractured thigh but is unfit for surgery due to her age and health condition. Her son bears the sole responsibility for the family’s finances while also caring for his sister with an intellectual disability, leaving their household struggling to make ends meet.

Kwan Chow Leong, a 69-year-old housewife from Bukit Mertajam, lost her husband in April this year. Together, they raised two unmarried children: a 38-year-old daughter with an intellectual disability who requires long-term care, and a 45-year-old son who works as a factory laborer earning just RM1,290 monthly, barely enough to support the family’s daily needs.

Two years ago, Kwan began experiencing weakness in her legs, which significantly affected her mobility and exacerbated the family’s financial struggles. Since then, One Hope Charity has been providing regular assistance with food supplies and lending essential equipment such as a commode chair, walker, and blood pressure monitor to alleviate the family’s burden. In February this year, Kwan developed swollen and ulcerated hands that required medical attention. Her son, unable to take time off work, applied for the charity’s accessible shuttle service to bring her to medical appointments.

In October, tragedy struck again when Kwan fell at home, fracturing her thigh. Due to her advanced age and poor health, doctors deemed her unfit for surgery, leaving her bedridden and in need of ongoing care. Her son visits her at the hospital daily after work, braving all weather conditions, but feels tormented seeing her immobility and suffering.

Initially, he considered quitting his job to care for both his mother and his sister. However, the harsh reality of “no work, no pay” forced him to abandon the idea. Left with no other option, he turned to One Hope Charity for assistance in raising funds to place his mother in a nursing home and cover the costs of ambulance services and other medical expenses.

After a home visit and careful assessment, One Hope Charity decided to launch a fundraising campaign to raise RM75,000 for Kwan’s medical and nursing home expenses. This amount will ensure that Kwan receives proper care in a nursing home for the rest of her life, allowing her son to continue working and easing the family’s financial burden. Additionally, One Hope Charity will allocate RM10,000 from its Emergency Medical Reserve Fund to support her immediate needs.
