Considering the need for close monitoring of bone marrow transplant patients' progress, One Hope Charity sponsored the Haplo BMT Chimerism Test at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) with a total value of RM 70,000.

Recently, the chairman of One Hope Charity, Dato' Chua Sui Hau, led a team to visit the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Department at UMMC and handed over a mock cheque worth RM 70,000 to Professor Hanny, the head of the department. Last year, One Hope Charity also sponsored the Haplo BMT Chimerism Test for RM 69,307 to the same department.

During the observation period following successful bone marrow transplantation, the chimerism test is essential to ensure the stability of the transplanted bone marrow or stem cells within the patient's body. This enables doctors to provide necessary treatment promptly upon detecting any abnormalities.

The chimerism test allows doctors to monitor the activity of the transplanted cells at specified time points, including the stability of stem cells in the bone marrow, the presence of rejection reactions, and the likelihood of relapse. Consequently, clinicians can assess the overall progress and determine if any interventions are required to ensure the success of the transplant.

Since 1987, the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Department at UMMC has completed transplants for over 520 children with various diseases. Since its first haploidentical bone marrow transplant (haplo-BMT) for an infant in 2016, the department has performed this transplant surgery for more than 50 children.
