Chan Siak Khwan (70), from Bayan Lepas, Penang, often stumbled and was found to have foot drop after an examination. He was still able to walk with the aid of a walker, so the doctor recommended that he wear an ankle foot orthosis. One Hope Charity provided a pair of ankle-foot orthoses to help improve his condition.

He had multiple falls three years ago and gradually lost the strength to lift his legs. He then went to the hospital for a check-up. The results showed that he had foot drop, which caused him frequently stumbled. The doctor informed him that his condition was severe which could also lead to respiratory failure.

He is a retired engineer, currently living alone in an apartment. His 65-year-old wife works as a domestic helper in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, earning about RM2,000 per month. The couple has two children who live in Kuala Lumpur and rarely come home. The elderly man has no income and relies on some living expenses provided by his daughter for his monthly expenditures. As a result, he is unable to afford the cost of an ankle-foot orthoses and has applied to One Hope Charity for assistance.

Upon receiving the request for assistance, One Hope Charity sent representatives to conduct a home visit. The board of directors decided to assist him with a pair of ankle-foot orthoses to prevent the condition of his leg from worsening.
